This is a Nightwatch pilot project to help former homeless people to take up further education and vocational training. We provide equipment such as working clothes and tools. We pay for training courses and technical books.

Nightwatch is the largest volunteer organisation in Croydon. We have been caring for the borough's homeless since 1976.  In 2004-2005, we renovated a derelict church building, renting it as a base for our work which takes place every day of the year. This property has 35m2 of space and has been adapted to our needs.

The opening of our premises, on the 6th October 2005, was attended by The Worshipful Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Maggie Mansell, amongst others. Photographs from this event can be seen here.

We distribute seventy Christmas presents each year and also give presents to clients who have children. This costs around £900, a sum which is raised each year; for many years past it has been a donation from the Greggs Trust.

Learn more about our work

This is our annual appeal for churches and other organisations to give something from their harvest festival celebrations to Nightwatch to distribute throughout next year.

We need cans of soup (not packets) and we also distribute canned fruit, vegetables, meat and fish to people who have basic cooking facilities, and give cans of tinned fruit to people who have no facilities at all. Canned milk is also popular. It is easier for us to store things if they come in boxes.

Delivery

The Croydon community is so generous at this time that we have to make special arrangements about sorting and storing the gifts. We have designated the first four Sunday evenings in October every year between 7:30pm and 10:30pm as times when we will receive donations, and volunteers will be present to sort out and store them.

Please contact a committee member for the delivery location - homeless people should not know this location and we never distribute from there. If you encounter any homeless people needing help, please ask them to go to the Queen's Gardens in central Croydon at 9:30pm any night and they will find us there. This is our annual appeal for churches and other organisations to give something from their harvest festival celebrations to Nightwatch to distribute throughout next year.
